The 3D asset pipeline has changed. AI mesh generation tools like Tripo, Meshy, and Rodin can produce surprisingly detailed base meshes from text prompts or reference images. But "surprisingly detailed" is not the same as "game-ready." The gap between an AI-generated mesh and a playable asset is where craft still matters.
This post walks through the complete 2026 pipeline: generate a base mesh with AI, clean it up in Blender, retopologize for real-time rendering, handle UVs and materials, build LODs, and export to your game engine. We will cover both manual techniques and addon-based automation at each step.
Step 1: AI Mesh Generation — Setting Expectations
AI mesh generation tools have improved dramatically. The current generation can produce meshes that look good in a turntable render. But the topology is almost always wrong for games. Expect:
- High polygon counts. AI meshes typically output 50K-500K triangles for a single prop. A game-ready version of the same prop might need 2K-15K triangles depending on its screen importance.
- Non-manifold geometry. Intersecting faces, internal geometry, zero-area triangles, and disconnected vertices are common.
- No UV mapping. Some tools output basic auto-UVs, but they are never optimized for texel density or atlas packing.
- Baked-in color data. Most AI meshes use vertex colors or generated textures that do not follow PBR conventions. You will need to rebake proper base color, normal, roughness, and metallic maps.
The right mental model: AI gives you a 3D reference sculpture. You still need to turn it into a game asset. The time savings come from skipping the initial sculpting phase, not from skipping the technical art pipeline.
Step 2: Cleanup in Blender
Before retopology, the mesh needs basic cleanup. Open the AI-generated mesh in Blender and run through this checklist:
Remove internal geometry. Switch to Edit Mode, select all, then use Mesh > Clean Up > Degenerate Dissolve and Delete Loose. For intersecting internal faces, the 3D Print Toolbox addon can identify non-manifold edges.
Fix normals. Select all faces and recalculate normals (Shift+N). Check for remaining flipped normals using the Face Orientation overlay. AI meshes frequently have inconsistent normal directions.
Decimate intelligently. If the mesh is extremely high-poly (200K+ triangles), use the Decimate modifier with the Un-Subdivide or Planar method to reduce complexity before retopology. Avoid the Collapse method at this stage — it creates triangulated topology that makes manual retopology harder.
Scale and orient. Ensure the mesh is at the correct scale for your game engine (1 Blender unit = 1 meter for Unreal, 1 unit for Godot). Apply all transforms (Ctrl+A > All Transforms).
This cleanup phase should take 10-20 minutes for a typical prop asset. Resist the temptation to skip it — problems at this stage compound at every later stage.
Step 3: Retopology — The Critical Step
Retopology is where an AI-generated mesh becomes a game-ready mesh. You are creating a new, clean mesh that follows the surface of the original while using efficient topology for real-time rendering.
Manual Retopology
For hero assets (weapons, key props, character models), manual retopology gives the best results:
- Set the AI mesh as a Shrinkwrap target.
- Use the Poly Build tool or RetopoFlow addon to draw new topology over the surface.
- Follow edge flow rules: loops should follow the contours of the shape, quads should be used wherever possible, and polygon density should concentrate where detail matters.
Manual retopology of a medium-complexity prop takes 30-60 minutes. For characters with deformation requirements, expect 2-4 hours.
Semi-Automated Retopology
For background props and environment assets where topology quality is less critical:
- QuadriFlow Remesh (built into Blender): Mesh > Remesh > QuadriFlow. Set a target face count and let the algorithm create quad-dominant topology. Results are acceptable for rigid props but poor for deforming meshes.
- Instant Meshes (free, external tool): Often produces better edge flow than QuadriFlow for organic shapes. Export the high-poly mesh, process in Instant Meshes, reimport.
- Blender's Voxel Remesh: Useful as an intermediate step to create a clean manifold mesh before applying QuadriFlow.
When to Skip Retopology Entirely
With Nanite in Unreal Engine, high-poly meshes can be used directly for static props. If your target engine is UE5 and the asset is a non-deforming prop, you can skip retopology and import the decimated AI mesh directly. Nanite will handle the LOD chain automatically.
This is a legitimate shortcut for environment dressing — rocks, debris, architectural details. Do not use this shortcut for characters, weapons, or any mesh that needs skeletal animation.
Step 4: UV Mapping and Material Setup
With clean topology in hand, the next step is UV mapping.
Smart UV Project works well for hard-surface props: select all faces in Edit Mode, then UV > Smart UV Project with an angle limit of 66-72 degrees. This produces usable UVs in seconds.
Manual UV unwrapping is worth the time for:
- Character models (need consistent texel density across the body)
- Tiling materials (need UVs aligned to world-space tiling)
- Atlas-packed assets (need UVs fit within specific atlas regions)
Texel density consistency matters more than UV space efficiency. Use the Texel Density Checker addon to ensure that a 1-meter area of your mesh uses approximately the same number of texture pixels regardless of which part of the mesh it is on.
Material Rebaking
AI-generated textures need to be rebaked into proper PBR maps:
- Create a new material with an Image Texture node for each PBR channel (Base Color, Normal, Roughness, Metallic, AO).
- Set up a high-poly to low-poly bake: the AI mesh as the high-poly source, your retopologized mesh as the target.
- Bake each map type. For normals, use Tangent Space. For AO, increase the ray distance to avoid self-shadowing artifacts.
- Post-process in Blender's image editor or an external tool: levels adjustment on roughness, cleanup on normal map edges, manual painting where AI textures have artifacts.
This baking pipeline is where MCP-connected Blender workflows can save significant time. If you are using an AI assistant connected to Blender through MCP, the entire bake setup — creating materials, assigning image textures, configuring bake settings, and executing bakes — can be automated through natural language commands rather than navigating menus manually.
Step 5: LOD Generation
If your target engine does not use Nanite (Godot, Unity, or Unreal with non-Nanite meshes), you need explicit LOD meshes.
A standard LOD chain for a prop:
- LOD0: Full detail. Your retopologized mesh at its target triangle count.
- LOD1: 50% of LOD0 triangles. Decimate modifier with Collapse method, preserving UVs.
- LOD2: 25% of LOD0 triangles. More aggressive decimation, simplified silhouette acceptable.
- LOD3: 10% of LOD0 triangles. Billboard or impostor for very distant views.

This creates LOD meshes as separate objects that you can export individually or as a group.
Step 6: Export and Engine Import
For Unreal Engine
Export as FBX with these settings:
- Scale: 1.0 (if Blender scene is in meters)
- Forward: -Y Forward, Z Up (matches Unreal's coordinate system)
- Apply Modifiers: enabled
- Mesh: Smoothing set to Face
On import in Unreal, enable "Combine Meshes" if you have LODs as separate objects, and assign LOD meshes in the LOD settings panel.
For Godot
Export as glTF 2.0 (.glb), which is Godot's preferred format:
- Include mesh, materials, and textures in the binary
- Apply modifiers before export
- Godot will import materials as StandardMaterial3D, which maps cleanly from glTF PBR materials
For Unity
FBX is still the standard. Unity's FBX importer handles scale conversion automatically if you set the scale factor on import to 1.0 and your Blender scene uses meters.
Automating the Full Pipeline
The complete pipeline — cleanup, retopology, UV, bake, LOD, export — can be partially or fully automated using Blender Python scripting and addons. For studios processing dozens of AI-generated meshes per week, automation is not optional.
Blender's Python API gives you access to every operation described in this post. A production pipeline script might take an input directory of AI meshes, run cleanup operations, apply QuadriFlow remesh at a target face count, auto-UV, bake PBR maps from vertex colors, generate LODs, and export engine-ready assets — all in batch.
The sweet spot for most teams is semi-automation: automate the mechanical steps (cleanup, decimation, LOD generation, export) and keep human judgment in the loop for retopology decisions, UV seam placement, and material quality checks. AI generates the starting point, automation handles the repetitive processing, and artists make the creative decisions that machines still get wrong.
That hybrid pipeline — AI generation, human curation, automated processing — is the defining workflow of 3D asset production in 2026.
