Implementation Challenges
Falling sand in Grid2D has a specific challenge: movement. When sand moves from cell A to cell B, you need to clear A and fill B. But another cell might also be trying to move into B simultaneously. This requires careful ordering or a conflict resolution strategy.
Checkerboard update pattern: Process the grid in a checkerboard pattern. On even frames, process even cells (where (x+y) is even). On odd frames, process odd cells. Each cell only reads from and writes to its neighbors, which are all in the opposite parity and therefore not being updated this frame. This eliminates conflicts.
In Niagara, implement this by checking (IndexX + IndexY + FrameNumber) % 2 == 0 at the start of the Simulation Stage and skipping cells that are not active this frame.

Performance
A 512x512 falling sand simulation runs at well under 1ms on any modern GPU. You can push to 1024x1024 or even 2048x2048 before performance becomes a concern. The bottleneck is usually rendering (if you are rendering each cell as an individual particle) rather than simulation.

Unoptimized neighbor reads. Each Grid2D read has a cost. A Simulation Stage that reads 20 neighbor cells per iteration is 5x more expensive than one that reads 4. Use the minimum neighborhood size that produces correct results.
Unnecessary particles. If you are using Grid2D for simulation and particles for rendering, ensure particle count is appropriate. A 256x256 grid does not need 65,536 particles to visualize — spawn particles only where the simulation value exceeds a threshold.
Dynamic bounds. Niagara systems with dynamic bounds recalculate their bounding box every frame. For stationary effects (environmental VFX), use fixed bounds. This saves both CPU (no bounds calculation) and GPU (tighter culling).
